Low-Cost Edge Sensing Platform

An open-hardware roadside sensing unit and firmware stack that brings reliable traffic telemetry to cities that cannot afford commercial instrumentation.

Overview

Good traffic data should not be a luxury good. This completed project produced an open-hardware edge unit — roughly a tenth the cost of commercial alternatives — that performs on-device vehicle counting and classification, uploading only summaries to preserve bandwidth and privacy.

Outcomes

  • Open-hardware reference design released under CERN-OHL
  • Firmware achieving on-device classification at the edge
  • Deployed across two pilot corridors and independently replicated by three partner groups

Legacy

The platform underpins data collection in several subsequent projects, including the current urban-mobility programme.
